Disk Drives
StoreVault base systems always include a minimum of
4 drives and you may select up to a maximum of 12. Drive capacities
must all be identical.
We recommend that any system with 6 or more drives also have a RAID-DP
drive. RAID-DP consumes one additional drive for parity but provides
significantly more data protection by ensuring that data will not
be lost in the event of concurrent failure of 2 disk drives. RAID-DP
means that the chances of data loss due to drive failure are ten times
lower than with RAID 5, even during a rebuild.
RAID-DP
With conventional RAID, if a more than one drive failure
occurs, or if one fails during a rebuild, data is catastrophically
lost. Dual Parity RAID (RAID-DP) was developed by NetApp to provide
extreme degrees of reliability for the price of one additional drive.
Amazingly, a RAID-DP protected system can withstand 2 concurrent disk
drive failures without data loss. It is a very good idea to combine
RAID-DP with a hot spare to maximize protection with rapid recovery.
A RAID-DP drive consumes one additional drive.

For a Hot Spare,
remember to count one drive LESS
|
|
Data ONTAP StoreVault Edition
consumes some system overhead with the following:
- 20% of the disk space is reserved for snapshots
- The file system has a 10% overhead
- RAID has a 5% overhead
- 1/9th of each drive sector are used for
drive data consistency checking
- The root volume includes some system data
|
Software
|
iSCSI
|
|
The iSCSI protocol allows
your StoreVault to function as an IP SAN or to attach directly
to as server. All Storevaults include the iSCSI protocol for
free. This means that all StoreVaults offer block-level storage
(SAN or DAS) in addition to file-level (NAS) storage, enabling
you to meet more storage needs with one single device.
|
|
CIFS
|
|
The Common Internet File
System (CIFS) is the protocol that enables file sharing among
Windows clients and servers. CIFS is a native Microsoft protocol
and is typically included on a StoreVault.
|
|
NFS
|
|
The Network File System
(NFS) is the protocol that enables file sharing for UNIX and
Linux machines as well as newer Macintosh systems. The Data
ONTAP StoreVault Edition NFS implementation is identical to
that found in NetApp’s enterprise-class products and is universally
recognized for its high levels of performance. It is not the
same as the NFS emulation found on other storage devices.
|
|
SnapRestore
|
|
Snapshot software can recover
individual files quickly and easily, and is included standard
on all StoreVaults. But only SnapRestore software can completely
restore an entire multi-terabyte volume in seconds. Unique to
NetApp products, SnapRestore is useful in cases where large
amounts of data are created and destroyed or where the need
to revert to past points in time is paramount. Deleted, modified
or corrupted accidentally or on purpose, SnapRestore lets you
recover massive amounts of data in the blink of en eye. With
traditional data recovery technologies, any of these events
can cost hours of productivity and significant lost revenue
as volumes are painstakingly reconstructed.
